Wheatley Refugee Support Group

WRSG was set up in early 2018 following public meetings that showed a strong level of concern for sanctuary-seekers. There was also an interest in exploring what they brought to our community- food, poetry, music, language.

We have organised public and zoom events with organisations such as Refugee Resource ( cooking and shared meals with their Women’s Group ), Asylum Welcome ( parties and supporting workshops with Afghans accommodated locally ), Sanctuary Hosting, and Refugee Action. We have organised poetry evenings and film shows.

We organise collections of clothes and bedding for Global Aid Network, for refugees in Greece, Bosnia and Ukraine, and of food for Asylum Welcome Food Bank. We also have a local contact with Care4Calais, for smaller donations.

Our interest is in sanctuary-seekers locally, nationally and internationally.

We also work alongside the Wheatley Ukrainian Refugee Co-ordinating Group, in support of Ukrainian refugees settled in Wheatley, and their hosts.
